The hills across the valley of the Ebro were long and white.
Холмы по ту сторону долины Эбро были длинные и белые.
On this side there was no shade and no trees and the station was between two lines of rails in the sun.
По эту сторону ни деревьев, ни тени, и станция между двумя путями вся на солнце.
Close against the side of the station there was the warm shadow of the building and a curtain, made of strings of bamboo beads, hung across the open door into the bar, to keep out flies.
Только у самого здания была горячая тень, и в открытой двери бара висел занавес из бамбуковых палочек.
The American and the girl with him sat at a table in the shade, outside the building.
Американец и его спутница сидели за столиком в тени здания.
It was very hot and the express from Barcelona would come in forty minutes.
Было очень жарко. Экспресс из Барселоны должен был прийти через сорок минут.
It stopped at this junction for two minutes and went on to Madrid.
На этой станции он стоял две минуты и шел дальше, в Мадрид.
“What should we drink?”. the girl asked.
— Чего бы нам выпить? — спросила девушка.
She had taken off her hat and put it on the table.
Она сняла шляпу и положила ее на стол.
“It’s pretty hot”, the man said.
— Ужасно жарко, — сказал мужчина.
“Let’s drink beer”.
— Давай выпьем пива.
“Dos cervezas”, the man said into the curtain.
— Dos cervezas,[3] - сказал мужчина, раздвинув занавес.
“Big ones?”. a woman asked from the doorway.
— Больших? — спросила из-за двери женщина.
“Yes.
— Да.
Two big ones”.
Две больших.
The woman brought two glasses of beer and two felt pads.
Женщина принесла две кружки пива и две войлочных подставки.
She put the felt pads and the beer glasses on the table and looked at the man and the girl.
Она положила их на стол, поставила на них кружки с пивом и взглянула на мужчину и девушку.
The girl was looking off at the line of hills. They were white in the sun and the country was brown and dry.
Девушка смотрела вдаль, на гряду холмов; они белели на солнце, а все вокруг высохло и побурело.
“They look like white elephants”, she said.
— Словно белые слоны, — сказала она.
“I’ve never seen one”, the man drank his beer.
— Никогда не видел белых слонов. — Мужчина выпил свое пиво.
“No, you wouldn’t have”.
— Где уж тебе видеть!
“I might have”, the man said.
— А почему бы и нет?
“Just because you say I wouldn’t have doesn’t prove anything”.
Мало ли что ты говоришь, это еще ровно ничего не значит.
The girl looked at the bead curtain.
Девушка взглянула на бамбуковый занавес.
“They’ve painted something on it”, she said.
— На нем что-то написано. — сказала она.
“What does it say?”.
— Что это значит?
“Anis del Toro.
— "Anis del Того".
It’s a drink”.
Это такая водка.
“Could we try it?”.
— Давай попробуем.
The man called “Listen” through the curtain.
— Послушайте! — позвал он.
The woman came out from the bar.
Женщина вышла из бара.
“Four reales”.
— С вас четыре реала.
“We want two Anis del Toro”.
— Дайте нам два стакана Anis del Того.
“With water?”.
— С водой?
“Do you want it with water?”.
— Ты как хочешь? С водой?
“I don’t know”, the girl said.
— Не знаю, — сказала девушка.
“Is it good with water?”.
— А с водой вкусно?
“It’s all right”.
— Недурно.
“You want them with water?”. asked the woman.
— Так как же, с водой? — спросила женщина.
“Yes, with water”.
— Да. С водой.
“It tastes like licorice”, the girl said and put the glass down.
— Отдает лакрицей, — сказала девушка и поставила стакан на стол.
“That’s the way with everything”.
— Вот и все так.
“Yes”, said the girl.
— Да, — сказала девушка.
“Everything tastes of licorice.
— Все отдает лакрицей.
Especially all the things you’ve waited so long for, like absinthe”.
Особенно то, чего так давно хотелось. Вот и с абсентом так было.
“Oh, cut it out”.
— Перестань.
“You started it”, the girl said.
— Ты сам первый начал, — сказала девушка.
“I was being amused.
— Мне было хорошо.
I was having a fine time”.
Я не скучала.
“Well, let’s try and have a fine time”. “All right.
— Ну что же, давай попробуем не скучать.
