On an exceptionally hot evening early in July a young man came out of the garret in which he lodged in S. Place and walked slowly, as though in hesitation, towards K. bridge. В начале июля, в чрезвычайно жаркое время, под вечер, один молодой человек вышел из своей каморки, которую нанимал от жильцов в С-м переулке, на улицу и медленно, как бы в нерешимости, отправился к К-ну мосту.

Но останавливаться на лестнице, слушать всякий взор про всю эту обыденную дребедень, до которой ему нет никакого дела, все эти приставания о платеже, угрозы, жалобы, и при этом самому изворачиваться, извиняться, лгать, - нет уж, лучше проскользнуть как- нибудь кошкой по лестнице и улизнуть, чтобы никто не видал.

The heat in the street was terrible: and the airlessness, the bustle and the plaster, scaffolding, bricks, and dust all about him, and that special Petersburg stench, so familiar to all who are unable to get out of town in summer—all worked painfully upon the young mans already overwrought nerves. На улице жара стояла страшная, к тому же духота, толкотня, всюду известка, леса, кирпич, пыль и та особенная летняя вонь, столь известная каждому петербуржцу, не имеющему возможности нанять дачу, - все это разом неприятно потрясло и без того уже расстроенные нервы юноши.
