К. больше не стал с ними разговаривать.
Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was arrested.

Every day at eight in the morning he was brought his breakfast by Mrs. Grubach’s cook - Mrs. Grubach was his landlady - but today she didn’t come.

That had never happened before.

K. waited a little while, looked from his pillow at the old woman who lived opposite and who was watching him with an inquisitiveness quite unusual for her, and finally, both hungry and disconcerted, rang the bell.
К. немного подождал, поглядел с кровати на старуху, жившую напротив, – она смотрела на него из окна с каким-то необычным для нее любопытством – и потом, чувствуя и голод, и некоторое недоумение, позвонил.
There was immediately a knock at the door and a man entered.
Тотчас же раздался стук, и в комнату вошел какой-то человек.
He had never seen the man in this house before.
К. никогда раньше в этой квартире его не видел.
He was slim but firmly built, his clothes were black and close-fitting, with many folds and pockets, buckles and buttons and a belt, all of which gave the impression of being very practical but without making it very clear what they were actually for.
Он был худощав и вместе с тем крепко сбит, в хорошо пригнанном черном костюме, похожем на дорожное платье – столько на нем было разных вытачек, карманов, пряжек, пуговиц и сзади хлястик, – от этого костюм казался особенно практичным, хотя трудно было сразу сказать, для чего все это нужно.
“Who are you?”.
– Вы кто такой?
asked K., sitting half upright in his bed.
– спросил К. и приподнялся на кровати.
The man, however, ignored the question as if his arrival simply had to be accepted, and merely replied, “You rang?”.
Но тот ничего не ответил, как будто его появление было в порядке вещей, и только спросил: . [1] – Вы звонили?
“Anna should have brought me my breakfast”, said K. He tried to work out who the man actually was, first in silence, just through observation and by thinking about it, but the man didn’t stay still to be looked at for very long.
– Пусть Анна принесет мне завтрак, – сказал К. и стал молча разглядывать этого человека, пытаясь прикинуть и сообразить, кто же он, в сущности, такой.
Instead he went over to the door, opened it slightly, and said to someone who was clearly standing immediately behind it, “He wants Anna to bring him his breakfast”.
Но тот не дал себя особенно рассматривать и, подойдя к двери, немного приоткрыл ее и сказал кому-то, очевидно стоявшему тут же, за порогом:. – Он хочет, чтобы Анна подала ему завтрак.
There was a little laughter in the neighbouring room, it was not clear from the sound of it whether there were several people laughing.
Из соседней комнаты послышался короткий смешок; по звуку трудно было угадать, один там человек или их несколько.
The strange man could not have learned anything from it that he hadn’t known already, but now he said to K., as if making his report “It is not possible”.
И хотя незнакомец явно не мог услыхать ничего для себя нового, он заявил К. официальным тоном:. – Это не положено! – Вот еще новости!
“It would be the first time that’s happened”, said K., as he jumped out of bed and quickly pulled on his trousers.
– сказал К., соскочил с кровати и торопливо натянул брюки.
“I want to see who that is in the next room, and why it is that Mrs. Grubach has let me be disturbed in this way”.
– Сейчас взгляну, что там за люди в соседней комнате. Посмотрим, как фрау Грубах объяснит это вторжение.
It immediately occurred to him that he needn’t have said this out loud, and that he must to some extent have acknowledged their authority by doing so, but that didn’t seem important to him at the time.
Правда, он тут же подумал, что не стоило высказывать свои мысли вслух, – выходило так, будто этими словами он в какой-то мере признает за незнакомцем право надзора; впрочем, сейчас это было не важно.
That, at least, is how the stranger took it, as he said, “Don’t you think you’d better stay where you are?”.
Но, видно, незнакомец так его и понял, потому что сразу сказал:. – Может быть, вам лучше остаться тут?
“I want neither to stay here nor to be spoken to by you until you’ve introduced yourself”.
– И не останусь, и разговаривать с вами не желаю, пока вы не скажете, кто вы такой.
“I meant it for your own good”, said the stranger and opened the door, this time without being asked.
– Зря обижаетесь, – сказал незнакомец и сам открыл дверь.
The next room, which K. entered more slowly than he had intended, looked at first glance exactly the same as it had the previous evening.
В соседней комнате, куда К. прошел медленнее, чем ему того хотелось, на первый взгляд со вчерашнего вечера почти ничего не изменилось.
It was Mrs. Grubach’s living room, over- filled with furniture, tablecloths, porcelain and photographs.
Это была гостиная фрау Грубах, загроможденная мебелью, коврами, фарфором и фотографиями; пожалуй, в ней сейчас стало немного просторнее, хотя это не сразу было заметно, тем более что главная перемена заключалась в том, что там находился какой-то человек.
Perhaps there was a little more space in there than usual today, but if so it was not immediately obvious, especially as the main difference was the presence of a man sitting by the open window with a book from which he now looked up.
Он сидел с книгой у открытого окна и сейчас, подняв глаза, сказал:.
“You should have stayed in your room!
– Вам следовало остаться у себя в комнате!
Didn’t Franz tell you?”.
Разве Франц вам ничего не говорил?
“And what is it you want, then?”.
– Да что вам, наконец, нужно?
said K., looking back and forth between this new acquaintance and the one named Franz, who had remained in the doorway.
– спросил К., переводя взгляд с нового посетителя на того, кого назвали Франц (он стоял в дверях), и снова на первого.
Through the open window he noticed the old woman again, who had come close to the window opposite so that she could continue to see everything. She was showing an inquisitiveness that really made it seem like she was going senile.
В открытое окно видна была та старуха: в припадке старческого любопытства она уже перебежала к другому окну – посмотреть, что будет дальше.
“I want to see Mrs. Grubach ... ”, said K., making a movement as if tearing himself away from the two men - even though they were standing well away from him - and wanted to go.
– Вот сейчас я спрошу фрау Грубах, – сказал К. И хотя он стоял поодаль от тех двоих, но сделал движение, словно хотел вырваться у них из рук, и уже пошел было из комнаты.
“No”, said the man at the window, who threw his book down on a coffee table and stood up.
– Нет, – сказал человек у окна, бросил книжку на столик и встал: – Вам нельзя уходить.
“You can’t go away when you’re under arrest”.
Ведь вы задержаны .
“That’s how it seems”, said K. “And why am I under arrest?”.

he then asked.
– Похоже на то, – сказал К. и добавил: – А за что?
“That’s something we’re not allowed to tell you.
– Мы не уполномочены давать объяснения.
Go into your room and wait there.
Идите в свою комнату и ждите.
Proceedings are underway and you’ll learn about everything all in good time.

It’s not really part of my job to be friendly towards you like this, but I hope no-one, apart from Franz, will hear about it, and he’s been more friendly towards you than he should have been, under the rules, himself.
Я и так нарушаю свои полномочия, разговаривая с вами по-дружески. Но надеюсь, что, кроме Франца, никто нас не слышит, а он и сам вопреки всем предписаниям слишком любезен с вами.
If you carry on having as much good luck as you have been with your arresting officers then you can reckon on things going well with you”.
Если вам и дальше так повезет, как повезло с назначением стражи, то можете быть спокойны.
K. wanted to sit down, but then he saw that, apart from the chair by the window, there was nowhere anywhere in the room where he could sit.
К. хотел было сесть, но увидел, что в комнате, кроме кресла у окна, сидеть не на чем.
“You’ll get the chance to see for yourself how true all this is”, said Franz and both men then walked up to K. They were significantly bigger than him, especially the second man, who frequently slapped him on the shoulder.
– Вы еще поймете, какие это верные слова, – сказал Франц, и вдруг оба сразу подступили к нему. Второй был много выше ростом, чем К. Он все похлопывал его по плечу.
The two of them felt K.’s nightshirt, and said he would now have to wear one that was of much lower quality, but that they would keep the nightshirt along with his other underclothes and return them to him if his case turned out well.
Они стали ощупывать ночную рубашку К., приговаривая, что теперь ему придется надеть рубаху куда хуже, но эту рубашку и все остальное его белье они приберегут и, если дело обернется в его пользу, ему все отдадут обратно.
“It’s better for you if you give us the things than if you leave them in the storeroom”, they said.
– Лучше отдайте вещи нам, чем на склад, – говорили они.
“Things have a tendency to go missing in the storeroom, and after a certain amount of time they sell things off, whether the case involved has come to an end or not.
– На складе вещи подменяют, а кроме того, через некоторое время все вещи распродают – все равно, окончилось дело или нет.
And cases like this can last a long time, especially the ones that have been coming up lately.
А вы знаете, как долго тянутся такие процессы, особенно в нынешнее время!
They’d give you the money they got for them, but it wouldn’t be very much as it’s not what they’re offered for them when they sell them that counts, it’s how much they get slipped on the side, and things like that lose their value anyway when they get passed on from hand to hand, year after year”.
Конечно, склад вам в конце концов вернет стоимость вещей, но, во-первых, сама по себе сумма ничтожная, потому что при распродаже цену вещей назначают не по их стоимости, а за взятки, да и вырученные деньги тают, они ведь что ни год переходят из рук в руки.
