Наконец я возвратился из моей двухнедельной отлучки.
I’VE FINALLY COME BACK from my twoweek absence.
Наши уже три дня как были в Рулетенбурге.
Our people have already been in Roulettenburg for three days.
Я думал, что они и бог знает как ждут меня, однако ж ошибся.
I thought they would be waiting for me God knows how eagerly, but I was mistaken.
Генерал смотрел чрезвычайно независимо, поговорил со мной свысока и отослал меня к сестре.
The general had an extremely independent look, spoke to me condescendingly, and sent me to his sister.
Было ясно, что они где-нибудь перехватили денег.
It was clear they had got hold of money somewhere.
Мне показалось даже, что генералу несколько совестно глядеть на меня.
It even seemed to me that the general was a little ashamed to look at me.
Марья Филипповна была в чрезвычайных хлопотах и поговорила со мною слегка; деньги, однако ж, приняла, сосчитала и выслушала весь мой рапорт.
Marya Filippovna was extremely busy and scarcely spoke with me; she took the money, however, counted it, and listened to my whole report.
К обеду ждали Мезенцова, французика и еще какого-то англичанина: как водится, деньги есть, так тотчас и званый обед, по-московски.
Mezentsov, the little Frenchman, and some Englishman or other were expected for dinner; as usual, when there’s money, then at once it’s a formal dinner; Moscowstyle.
Полина Александровна, увидев меня, спросила, что я так долго? и, не дождавшись ответа, ушла куда-то.
Polina Alexandrovna, seeing me, asked what had taken me so long, and went off somewhere without waiting for an answer.
Разумеется, она сделала это нарочно.
Of course, she did it on purpose.
Нам, однако ж, надо объясниться.
We must have a talk, however.
Много накопилось.
A lot has accumulated.
Мне отвели маленькую комнатку, в четвертом этаже отеля.
I’ve been assigned a small room on the fourth floor of the hotel.
Здесь известно, что я принадлежу к свите генерала.
It’s known here that I belong to the general’s suite .
По всему видно, что они успели-таки дать себя знать.
Byall appearances, they’ve managed to make themselves known.
Генерала считают здесь все богатейшим русским вельможей.
The general is regarded by everyone here as a very rich Russian grandee.
Еще до обеда он успел, между другими поручениями, дать мне два тысячефранковых билета разменять.
Before dinner he managed, among other errands, to give me two thousandfranc notes to have changed.
Я разменял их в конторе отеля.
I changed them in the hotel office.
Теперь на нас будут смотреть, как на миллионеров, по крайней мере целую неделю.
Now they’ll look at us as millionaires for at least a whole week.
Я хотел было взять Мишу и Надю и пойти с ними гулять, но с лестницы меня позвали к генералу; ему заблагорассудилось осведомиться, куда я их поведу.
I was about to take Misha and Nadya for a walk, but on the stairs I was summoned to the general; he had seen fit to inquire where I was going to take them.
Этот человек решительно не может смотреть мне прямо в глаза; он бы и очень хотел, но я каждый раз отвечаю ему таким пристальным, то есть непочтительным взглядом, что он как будто конфузится.
The man is decidedly unable to look me straight in the eye; he would very much like to, but I respond each time with such an intent–that is, irreverent–gaze, that he seems disconcerted.
В весьма напыщенной речи, насаживая одну фразу на другую и наконец совсем запутавшись, он дал мне понять, чтоб я гулял с детьми где-нибудь, подальше от воксала, в парке.
In a highly pompous speech, piling one phrase on another and finally becoming totally confused, he gave me to understand that I should stroll with the children somewhere in the park, a good distance from the vauxhall.
Наконец он рассердился совсем и круто прибавил:. — А то вы, пожалуй, их в воксал, на рулетку, поведете.
{1} He finally became quite angry and added abruptly: “Or else you might just take them to the vauxhall, to the roulette tables.
Вы меня извините, — прибавил он, — но я знаю, вы еще довольно легкомысленны и способны, пожалуй, играть.
Excuse me,” he added, “but I know you’re still rather lightminded and perhaps capable of gambling.
Во всяком случае, хоть я и не ментор ваш, да и роли такой на себя брать не желаю, но по крайней мере имею право пожелать, чтобы вы, так сказать, меня-то не окомпрометировали….
In any case, though I am not your mentor, and have no wish to take that role upon myself, I do at any rate have the right to wish that you not, so to speak, compromise me…”.
— Да ведь у меня и денег нет, — отвечал я спокойно; — чтобы проиграться, нужно их иметь.
“But I don’t even have any money,” I said calmly. “To lose it, you have to have it.”.
— Вы их немедленно получите, — ответил генерал, покраснев немного, порылся у себя в бюро, справился в книжке, и оказалось, что за ним моих денег около ста двадцати рублей.
“You shall have it at once,” the general replied, blushing slightly. He rummaged in his desk, consulted a ledger, and it turned out that he owed me about a hundred and twenty roubles.
— Как же мы сосчитаемся, — заговорил он, — надо переводить на талеры.
“How are we going to reckon it up?” he began. “It has to be converted into thalers.
Да вот возьмите сто талеров, круглым счетом, — остальное, конечно, не пропадет.
Here, take a hundred thalers, a round figure– the rest, of course, won’t get lost.”.
Я молча взял деньги.
I silently took the money.
— Вы, пожалуйста, не обижайтесь моими словами, вы так обидчивы… Если я вам заметил, то я, так сказать, вас предостерег и уж, конечно, имею на то некоторое право….
“Please don’t be offended by my words, you’re so touchy…If I made that observation, it was, so to speak, to warn you, and, of course, I have a certain right to do so…”.
Возвращаясь пред обедом с детьми домой, я встретил целую кавалькаду.
Coming back home with the children before dinner, I met a whole cavalcade.
Наши ездили осматривать какие-то развалины.
Our people had gone to have a look at some ruins.
Две превосходные коляски, великолепные лошади.
Two excellent carriages, magnificent horses!
Mademoiselle Blanche в одной коляске с Марьей Филипповной и Полиной; французик, англичанин и наш генерал верхами.
Mlle Blanche in the same carriage with Marya Filippovna and Polina; the little Frenchman, the Englishman, and the general on horseback.
Прохожие останавливались и смотрели; эффект был произведен; только генералу несдобровать.
Passersby stopped and looked; an effect was produced; only it won’t come to any good for the general.
Я рассчитал, что с четырьмя тысячами франков, которые я привез, да прибавив сюда то, что они, очевидно, успели перехватить, у них теперь есть семь или восемь тысяч франков; этого слишком мало для m-lle Blanche.
I calculated that with the four thousand francs I had brought, plus whatever they had evidently managed to get hold of here, they now had seven or eight thousand francs. That is too little for Mlle Blanche.
M-lle Blanche стоит тоже в нашем отеле, вместе с матерью; где-то тут же и наш французик.
Mlle Blanche is also staying in our hotel, along with her mother; our little Frenchman is here somewhere as well.
Лакеи называют его «m-r le comte [1] », мать m-lle Blanche называется «m-me la comtesse [2] »; что ж, может быть, и в самом деле они comte et comtesse.
The servants call him “M. le comte,” Mlle Blanche’s mother is called “Mme la comtesse”; well, maybe they really are comte and comtesse. [1].
Я так и знал, что m-r le comte меня не узнает, когда мы соединимся за обедом.
I just knew that M. le comte would not recognize me when we gathered for dinner.
Генерал, конечно, и не подумал бы нас знакомить или хоть меня ему отрекомендовать; а m-r le comte сам бывал в России и знает, как невелика птица — то, что они называют outchitel.
The general, of course, did not even think of introducing us or of presenting me to him; and M. le comte himself has visited Russia and knows what small fry an outchitel –as they call it–is there.
Он, впрочем, меня очень хорошо знает.
He knows me very well, however.
Но, признаться, я и к обеду-то явился непрошеным; кажется, генерал позабыл распорядиться, а то бы, наверно, послал меня обедать за table dhotом [3] .
But, I must confess, I appeared at dinner uninvited; it seems the general forgot to give orders, otherwise he would surely have sent me to eat at the table d’hôte .
Я явился сам, так что генерал посмотрел на меня с неудовольствием.
[3] I appeared on my own, so that the general looked at me with displeasure.
Добрая Марья Филипповна тотчас же указала мне место; но встреча с мистером Астлеем меня выручила, и я поневоле оказался принадлежащим к их обществу.
Kindly Marya Filippovna showed me to a place at once; but my having met Mr. Astley helped me, and willynilly I wound up making part of their company.
Этого странного англичанина я встретил сначала в Пруссии, в вагоне, где мы сидели друг против друга, когда я догонял наших; потом я столкнулся с ним, въезжая во Францию, наконец — в Швейцарии; в течение этих двух недель — два раза, и вот теперь я вдруг встретил его уже в Рулетенбурге.
I first met this strange Englishman in Prussia, on a train where we sat opposite each other, when I was catching up with our people; then I ran into him on entering France, and finally in Switzerland; twice in the course of these two weeks–and now I suddenly met him in Roulettenburg.
Я никогда в жизни не встречал человека более застенчивого; он застенчив до глупости и сам, конечно, знает об этом, потому что он вовсе не глуп.
Never in my life have I met a shyer man; he’s shy to the point of stupidity, and, of course, he knows it himself, because he’s not at all stupid.
Впрочем, он очень милый и тихий.
However, he’s very nice and quiet.
Я заставил его разговориться при первой встрече в Пруссии.
I got him to talk at our first meeting in Prussia.
