The road of the pass was hard and smooth and not yet dusty in the early morning.

“There are only two places, and they are occupied”, I said.

“You will be uncomfortable”.

“Should we take him?”. I asked Guy.
— Возьмем его? — спросил я Гая.
“He seems to be going anyway”, Guy said.
— Он все равно увяжется, — ответил Гай.
The young man handed in a parcel through the window.
Молодой человек протянул нам в окно сверток.
“Look after this”, he said.
— Возьмите это к себе, — сказал он.
Two men tied his suitcase on the back of the car, above our suitcases.
Двое мужчин привязали его чемодан поверх нашего сзади машины.
He shook hands with every one, explained that to a Fascist and a man as used to travelling as himself there was no discomfort, and climbed up on the running-board on the left-hand side of the car, holding on inside, his right arm through the open window.
Он попрощался с ними за руку, сказав, что для фашиста и человека, привыкшего к путешествиям, не существует неудобств, вскочил на левую подножку автомобиля, просунув правую руку в окно.
“You can start”, he said.
— Можно ехать, — сказал он.
The crowd waved.

He waved with his free hand.

“What did he say?”. Guy asked me.
— Что он сказал? — спросил меня Гай.
“That we could start”.
— Что мы можем ехать.
“Isn’t he nice?”. Guy said.
— Хорош, а? — заметил Гай.
The road followed a river.
Дорога шла вдоль реки.
Across the river were mountains.
За рекой тянулись горы.
The sun was taking the frost out of the grass.
Иней на траве таял на солнце.
It was bright and cold and the air came cold through the open wind-shield.
Холодный прозрачный воздух врывался через поднятый щит машины.
“How do you think he likes it out there?”.
— Интересно, как он там себя чувствует?
Guy was looking up the road.
Гай смотрел вперед.
His view out of his side of the car was blocked by our guest.
С левой стороны наш спутник закрывал от него дорогу.
The young man projected from the side of the car like the figurehead of a ship.
Молодой человек торчал на подножке машины, как фигура на носу корабля.
He had turned his coat collar up and pulled his hat down and his nose looked cold in the wind.

“Maybe he’ll get enough of it”, Guy said.
— Может быть, это ему скоро надоест.
“That’s the side our bum tire’s on”.
С той стороны у нас садится шина, — сказал Гай.
“Oh, he’d leave us if we blew out”, I said.
— Да он живо соскочит, если шина лопнет, — ответил я.
“He wouldn’t get his travelling-clothes dirty”.
— Он не захочет испачкать в пыли свой дорожный костюм.
“Well, I don’t mind him”, Guy said—“except the way he leans out on the turns”.
— Ладно. Он мне не мешает, — сказал Гай. — Только здорово кренит машину на поворотах.
The woods were gone; the road had left the river to climb; the radiator was boiling; the young man looked annoyedly and suspiciously at the steam and rusty water; the engine was grinding, with both Guy’s feet on the first-speed pedal, up and up, back and forth and up, and, finally, out level.
Леса кончились; река осталась позади; дорога пошла в гору; вода в радиаторе кипела; молодой человек со скучающим и недоверчивым видом смотрел на пар и ржавую воду; машина кряхтела. Гай нажал педаль первой скорости, толчок вперед, еще вперед, потом назад, опять вперед, и машина взяла подъем.
The grinding stopped, and in the new quiet there was a great churning bubbling in the radiator.

We were at the top of the last range above Spezia and the sea.

The road descended with short, barely rounded turns.
